The Importance of Aerobics
The first part to a great workout routine is aerobic exercise. Even though some people will swear up and down that yoga and weight lifting lead to weight loss, they don’t hold a candle to what aerobic exercise will do for your waistline. Besides the fact that aerobic exercise is the key to slimming down, it is also the key to healthy heart and lungs. If part of the reason you want to exercise is that you want to live longer, you can’t ignore this component of a fitness training program.
It Can Be Fun, Really
Unfortunately, the universe has a way of making everything good for you seem horrible: case in point, broccoli. Out of all the different parts of a fitness program, aerobic is almost always the least appealing. Why? It makes you sweat. It makes you hurt. It burns. The list goes on and on. Nothing will make you feel more physically tired that an intense aerobic workout. So, if you even stand a chance of getting it done, make sure it is something you enjoy. Popular aerobic workouts include running, swimming, dancing, cross-country skiing, and even games like tennis or basketball. What? That’s right. A lot of your favorite sports are also great aerobic workouts! So, don’t feel like you have to run in order to get in shape; just call a few buddies or join a sports league!
Get Pumped Up!
When you’re not busy huffing and puffing, you should be pumping the iron. Weight lifting, or resistance training, is an integral part of a healthy routine. Weight lifting does a few different things for the body: it increases strength (obviously), increases metabolism, and can even help prevent osteoporosis. For men, weight lifting is usually the first thing they want to do and that’s great! Paired with aerobic exercise, it will get you in the best shape of your life.
Of Women and Weights
Women, on the other hand, often worry that lifting weights will make them look large and masculine. Here’s some great news: that’s a myth! Unless you are taking steroids, you will never, ever bulk up like a man will. Since women don’t have the same levels of testosterone, their bodies respond very differently to weight lifting. When women lift weights, they get leaner, stronger, and more defined. If you have ever wanted to get rid of arm or back chub, you’re going to love what lifting weights will do for your body! You should also remember that weight lifting increases metabolism. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn just living your life. If that isn’t a great reason to hit the free weights, what is?
Keep It Loose
Flexibility is the third component of health and wellness in Kansas City. If you’ve ever been involved in any kind of sport or have worked out before, you know how sore and stiff you can get. As you work out, you break down muscles which, in turn, grow back stronger. Without flexibility workouts, like stretching or yoga, they become thicker and less pliant, leading to injury and fatigue.
